Sunday 18th October
Evening
Tavern of Hell
Doesn't take me long to load up my stuff - and some of Lucien's, as I figure he can spare a couple of shirts, pair of jeans or two - and drive it over to the tenement. Don't bother to haul most of it up there, just blankets and the little stove I used to heat coffee on, couple of other things. I've got time.
When I get back down, knee screaming at me, there's a couple of kids hanging round the truck. No idea how old, one dirty, one scrubbed painfully clean. They move back a bit as I come down the steps, but not enough. It's mostly curiosity I feel from them, though, and a buried kind of yearning.
Sigh a bit. Better to deal with this now. "Look." Limp across and open the door of the truck, look down on them both. "'ll take you for a ride, if you want." See the wariness and ah, reckon I know how that sounded. "Not tonight, and only if your parents say you can. Let you have a look under the hood, whatever." Need to get Zann to look at it anyway, I reckon. Wonder if she's any good with kids, if I can find a way to get her out here. "But you mess with this when I'm not here and I'll rip your fucking hands off. You got that?" Glimmer of needle teeth in the twilight, just enough to make them step back again, right out of my way as I climb in and slam the door, head into town.
Park outside the Tavern - figure no one's going to be complaining on Silk Road, at least. Verdi's not at the bar when I go in, and I'm more disappointed than I'd realised I'd be. Not just cause I really need a fucking drink after all those stairs and figure Verdi'd be good for one, either. Well, hell, maybe I can scam one off someone else.
