I pour the water over the grounds and turn back to her while I wait for them to settle. I'm expecting her to finally get the basket open and that the berries will get me at least a smile, but no, I must have got her started thinking about the party by mentioning it. And yeah, she did say she wanted an explanation for what happened with Wanda. I just hoped she had forgotten about it.
I take a deep breath. "That riot over the carnie guy they had in jail, a couple days before I met you? She was trying to run into the middle of that, screaming and fighting, and she wouldn't see sense when a couple of us tried to pull her away. She broke Jamie Kincaid's nose, and so I tried to knock her out. Didn't know she was pregnant, or...who she was, really." It's not a very good story, but it's true, and if she wants to know better, I'll point her to Valmont.
