(Continued from Here)
Another day finds The Dormouse open to the local busybodies, and Wanda minding shoppe in a overtired, easily irritated mood. She has already thrown two customers out, and is contemplating tossing a third, when Valmont comes in. He helps to momentarily lift her heavy spirits...
but stress, depression and exhaustion quickly overtake her again and she ends up bursting into tears. She tries to gloss the episode over, but Valmont closes up shoppe and gently prods her to talk to him. Wanda finally gives in and confesses to him who her husband really is. After wondering why 'the devil' would wed a mortal woman, Valmont quickly puts two and two together.
******************************************************
"What are you going to do?"
I don't think I realized how cold I was until Valmont's warm hand encircles mine. At least having to think rationally gets the tears to stop. I dab at my eyes with my free hand and take a deep breath.
"The only thing to do, I suppose. Have the child and try to raise her to be a good person. I... get the impression that I will be a single mother, mostly. I will have to try and use that to my advantage, and hope nurture wins out over nature."
