Day 134, Monday October 12th
Too Damn Early in the Morning
I feel like I'm finally starting to settle into this whole Councilor thing. At first it was like a whirlwind. Always papers to sign an' things to look into. I never realized how much of the mundane, town-running business goes though the Council. Toby swears it'll calm down a bit once the mayoral election is over and the Council won't need to handle it all, but still. Takes some getting used to.
Bakery's been doing well though. I have to admit, if only to myself, I was afraid it'd slip without me there constantly. Robert's shown that he's ready to finish his apprenticeship I think. Time to finish it on paper, and formally bring him on as a journeyman baker. I know he's been looking forward to it, and it'll mean he'll make enough to find his own place. He's been envying John that.
And that's how we got here, walking by the River before we start the bake. It seemed right to do it before the real start of our day rather then after. This is the end of a chapter in his life, but more importantly, its the beginning of a new one. Shove my hands into the pockets of my jacket while I think of how to open, when Robert speaks up.
"Boss....what's that shape over there look like to you?"
I follow his gaze to the underbrush near the bank. Dirt, grass, little stubby bushes, and a large lump wrapped in a sheet. With a shoe sticking out the bottom.
We just kinda look at each other for a second and then bolt over to it.
Robert reaches out and nearly pulls the sheet back before I grab him back, "No! Don't touch it!"
"But its a person! We should-"
"Exactly! Go! Run, get the Sheriff! I'll stay here just in case. Get her and bring her back here. We don't want to touch it and mess anything up."
He nods and starts up the bank, then stops halfway up and turns back to me, "You know Boss, I had to get her last time too," and then he's off jogging to Mab's.
Poor kid's gonna get a reputation for bringing her bad news.
I wait about 45 seconds after Robert leaves before I can't stand it anymore, and walk to the other side of the corpse. Using the toe of my shoe I push the sheet just enough to get a glimpse of the face.
"Fuck. Looks like Karina's running un-opposed then."
