Masquerade! Hide your face, so the world will never find you!

Saturday, October 31st
Evening
The Home of Alessandra Ferdis

The last few days have been, at best, a blur of activity and I can't say that it's left me in the best of spirits.  Party planning is always a chore, even a gathering as small as this, and I suppose it's the price to be paid - blood, sweat, and countless hours spent hunched over fabric - for an evening of excitement.  Alessandra has been more than accommodating, as I've measured, decorated, and almost completely reordered most of her house.  It will take some time, tomorrow once the festivities are well over, to put things back to sorts, but I've already hired hands to assist in that.

That is one benefit of living in Excolo, there is never a shortage of strong backs willing to do a bit of labor for good pay, and in a matter of days the entire place has been transformed into something resembling a fitting locale.  The walls have been covered with lush fabrics, the garden littered with a multitude of hanging lights, and the main room leading to the back cleared for the guests.  After that, it's only been a matter of setting up the refreshments, finding a suitable place for the music, and dimming the lights.

I could kill myself over the details of course, it's in my nature, and so as soon as things are well in hand, I retire to the upstairs guest suite to dress.  It's a simple design, more a personal amusement than anything else, and I doubt anyone will get the joke.  Those always are the best sorts of fun, though, the personal chuckles that are mine alone.  I finish strapping my sword to my side, mask still sitting on a nearby table, and cross to the balcony doors to peek outside.  The sun has faded into the horizon and guests have started to arrive.  That leaves me with a bit of time - I have no intention on making anything less than a memorable entrance - and so I lean against the door frame, careful to keep out of sight of those out front, and light a cigarette.

There's movement from the adjacent dressing room.  Glass.  I'd nearly forgotten, in the insanity of preparations, that she was dressing here as well.  It certainly wouldn't do to have Iago see her before the game has begun, after all.  I smile at that and call out, "You can't hide in there all evening, pet.  Might as well come out and let me have a look."

[It's midnight!  Wrapping up!]

The music is a bit faster now, and I'm a bit sad to let go of Tess because the waltzing was pretty, but on the other hand perhaps a more sociable dance will help stop my mind drumming on all sorts of unsuitable things...

Two boys come over and ask if they can join us. I'm a little shocked to see two boys here together, and I know that's hypocritical of me when I'm here with Tess. But still, girls can get away with it more easily than boys. One of them doesn't really have a costume at all, though I wonder if his long hair is real - not many men in town have long hair except for the doctor - and the other is dressed as a dogheaded thing. I smile at them both and we all start dancing, and I think to myself with amusement that it must look strange from the outside, three boys dancing with one girl.

"You enjoying the party?" I call to the boys as we step in and twirl.

I'm still countin' time under my breath as we weave in an out, handin' each other off. Tess is grinnin' and red in the face and I'm glad she's havin' fun, but there's still something strange 'bout her and Miss O'Hara, and I'm shyin' away from figurin' it out. "You enjoying the party?" Miss O'Hara asks as first I and then the phantom spin 'round with her.

"I surely am," I say, and then realize that even with the mask there's a good chance 'a Tess recognizin' my voice and I clam up.

I've never done a dance like this one but after a round or so the pattern comes clearer. and I can pay attention to something other than my hands and feet. Marian is grinning and robin is smiling and asking us, You enjoying the party? Ah. A woman's voice. I push that to the back of my mind with all the other things to think on later. tonight it doesn't matter who or what she is, or pretends to be. tonight is all about surfaces. A show of sorts with everyone as players and audience at the same time. I smile at the conceit in that thought, and because I am having fun.

Young Gaueko answers her, I surely am, I turn my smile on Robin, eyes bright with my discovery that yes, I am having fun. "Oh, yes! More than I was expecting to."

"You enjoying the party?" Kate asks as we step 'n turn and hand each other off. "I surely am," says the boy dressed as the hound-god, and I lose the step fer a sec 'cause he sounds a bit like Johnny, and there ain't many who would or could dress up like that. What's he doin' here, and what's he doin' dancin' with a boy?

I shake my head and keep up with the dance; I might be wrong, and if it is him, well, I'll let it pass fer tonight. But havin' that talk with Johnny seems more 'n more urgent, 'cause he's got a good knack fer gettin' himself in trouble. "Oh, yes! More than I was expecting to." I smile, glad his friend's havin' a good time. I think he might be new t'town, 'cause he dunt talk like a local and there ain't many boys in town with hair that long.

The dance ends in a quick sharp finish and I have t'catch my breath. My face must be red 'n I'm sweatin' hard. "Whew," I say fannin' myself. "I think I need another drink. You want anythin'?" I ask Kate and the boys.

[identity profile] kateohara.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The boys agree they are having a good time, and I smile.

"Oh, yes! More than I was expecting to."

"Were you not looking forward to it, then?" I ask the boy with long hair as we spin round.

The dance finishes and we applaud the musicians, and I smile at Tess. She's quite red faced, but... Well, it's hard not to look at her heaving bosom, and I feel my own cheeks get a bit flushed, but not because I'm tired.

"I think I need another drink. You want anythin'?"

"I'll come with you," I say. "I'm quite thirsty too. We can bring you back something," I smile at the boys, and then, feeling a bit daring, I put my arm round Tess's waist as we go off to the refreshments table.

"Dancing's so much fun! I hadn't realised I missed it," I say happily. "You are quite light on your feet," I smile as we get to the drinks table.

[identity profile] john-thiess.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The phantom girl is enjoyin' herself, her hair flingin' out as she spins. when the dance is done I want t'wipe my face, but Tess is here and I dunt want her gettin' any more 'n she's got. "I think I need another drink," Tess says. "You want anythin'?" Miss O'Hara's smilin' at her. "I'm quite thirsty too. We can bring you back something," she says t'me and the phantom girl. And then she puts her arm 'round Tess as they walk off!

I turn 'round quick, blushin' bright 'nough t'beat the sun. I tip up my mask and wipe the sweat off 'a my face, tryin' not t'catch the scent 'a desire risin' off 'a them both. Heck. "I'm glad you're havin' fun," I say t'the girl, who's watchin' Tess 'n Miss O'Hara walkin' t'the drinks table. I slip my arm 'round her waist and stay close, lettin' her strange scent clear the disturbin' smell 'a my sister away.

[identity profile] damien-dw.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin catches that answer and asks me another question as we spin round, Were you not looking forward to it, then?

Oops! Don't want to let on that I'm not just another guest. remember discrete? try to keep being discreet. "Not sure! Expected to do more peoplewatching than anything else. Glad it turned out different."

That was fun! I'm smiling more than I have in months and all of us are a bit sweaty. Marian fans herself and says, I think I need another drink,You want anythin'? Robin's smiling at her in a way I think I recognize. and she;s offering to go with her friend... Also offers to bring us something. I'm quite thirsty too. We can bring you back something, I nod quickly. I am thirsty...and I was about to offer to go with as an extra set of hands but I think I'd be in the way if I did that...So instead I agree. "Yes, I think we all could use a drink, thank you."

Wolf boy turns round a bit fast and then I see why he was so quick to turn his face away. He tips the mask up a bit to wipe away the sweat. What I can see of his face is pleasant enough, and I think he might be a fair bit younger than me.He puts his arm round my waist and says, I'm glad you're havin' fun,

I lean on him a bit, not too much just a little. "I'm glad you asked me to dance."

[identity profile] tess-thiess.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Kate's eyes drop as we finish and I grin. "I'll come with you," she says. "I'm quite thirsty too. We can bring you back something," and she smiles at the two young men. She puts her arm 'round my hips as we move through the crowd, and I snug close to her. "Dancing's so much fun! I hadn't realised I missed it. You are quite light on your feet."

I give her a quick kiss and pour out four small glasses 'a the punch. "Thanks. You're pretty quick yourself." I nod back t'where the one boy's got his arm 'round the taller. "They're pretty cute, yeah?" Ignorin' my suspicions, I'm glad they can be close 'n open like that at the party, even if they might not be able other times. The punch seems sweeter than I remember, and I press myself 'gainst Kate's side, slippin' an arm 'round her with my hand low on her belly. "You know, we dunt have t'go back 'n dance," I whisper in her ear.

[identity profile] kateohara.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"They're pretty cute, yeah?"

I glance back at the boys and smile.

"They are. I think the dog-boy might regret wearing a mask that covers his whole face, though," I say mischievously after she kisses me. She passes me some more punch, and I wonder a bit about what she thought might be in it, but it can't be harmful if she's drinking it, so I take another sip. Tess presses up against me, and normally I'd be embarrassed by this - I barely wanted Laurence to hold my hand in public - but it seems alright tonight, somehow. More than alright. She puts her hand on my stomach, and it makes me shiver.

"You know, we dunt have t'go back 'n dance," she says, and I smile back.

"I suppose we don't... Where would you like to go instead?" I ask, feeling daring and carefree... and maybe a little tipsy, but that doesn't seem to matter.

[identity profile] tess-thiess.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"They are," she says smilin' at the two 'a them "I think the dog-boy might regret wearing a mask that covers his whole face, though." I grin. "So long as he dunt regret dressin' like the hound-god, I think he'll be fine."

She shivers when I touch her. "I suppose we don't... Where would you like to go instead?" I smile into her hair, brushin' my lips 'long the outside curve 'a her ear. "We could go explore upstairs - it might be a bit less crowded, and I wouldn't mind a bit 'a privacy."

She leans into me. "I'm glad you asked me to dance," she says as we wait fer the Tess 'n Kate t'come back. A couple minutes go by without me seein' 'em though, and I start t'wonder what might 'a happened t'them 'afore I realize it really ain't somethin' I want t'dwell on.

I push my mask up again 'n give her a quick kiss on the jaw. "I'm glad too," I say, and it's neat kissin' someone when I got no idea who they are, just that they seem t'like me. It reminds me 'a Verdi, some. "I think we ain't gettin' those drinks," I say wryly. I dunt know that I recognize many folks like this, and I ain't seen Luke 'r 'Ri none, 'cause it'd be nice t'see 'em here.

[identity profile] damien-dw.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
It is comfortable here leaning against this nice young man as we wait for our companions to return. Some time passes and I begin to wonder if they plan to return after all. He pushes up his mask again and I feel a light brush of lips against my jaw. It feels all tingly and sensitive there as if I can still feel it. I'm glad too, he says and then addsI think we ain't gettin' those drinks,

I turn my head a little to face him. "It certainly looks that way." I say, matching his tone.

[identity profile] john-thiess.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
She turns her head some, facin' me. "It certainly looks that way," she says, soundin' like she's figured what happened 'n I try not t'blush. There's an awkward moment then, 'cause we dint come here together but I dunt think I ought t'just walk off. "So," I say, not sure what happens next.

[identity profile] damien-dw.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
He blushes a bit and then we fall into an awkward silence. It only lasts a moment though as he speaks up, So,

I find I am just a little bit nervous. Don't know what I want to do really, except for there not to be more awkward silence, so I smile down at him and give him some options.

"Do you want some punch? We could get our own. Or if you'd rather keep dancing we could do that." And I realize I do know one thing I want; I want to see his eyes, properly without that ridiculous mask in the way. "Or we could go somewhere and talk."

I know where I'd take him too, there's a nice long porch out back of the house and I haven't seen many people going that way yet. I'm sure we could find a place to sit and...
