Lucien describes her, and I can almost keep hoping until he says her name. Don’t think this town is big enough for two women who fit that description, certainly not with that name. Well, so much for liking this man and being liked back. “No,” I answer him truthfully, “I haven’t been in for tea.” I take a drink to give myself time to think again, enjoying the coffee before it gets knocked out of my hand. I liked the idea of this man hitting me a lot better when both of us weren’t holding scalding drinks.

“Wouldn’t say I’ve met her, really.” God, there is no good way to tell this. “The riot, a week back? Not sure what she was doing in the middle of it, woman in her condition, but she was. Trying to get to the jail, I think, and she wouldn’t listen to sense.” No way that’s flattering, anyway, to her or me.

Take another drink. This is good coffee. Shame to waste it. “There were three of us, trying to get her inside, and she was fighting, and I thought it might be easier to do if she weren’t. Meant to knock her out, but she didn’t go down like they usually do.” Yeah, going on about how I meant to hurt her and didn’t manage to is not going to earn me any favors. “She did stop swinging long enough for us to get into the bakery. I apologized afterward— well, I said she could hit me back if she wanted to. She, ah, didn’t take me up on that.”

I’m really, really hoping that we can both have a good laugh over about women and how crazy they are, and everything will be just fine, but somehow I doubt that’s going to happen.
